Retina Font Family is a fresh, geometric, sans-serif font family. The family began with its MicroPlus styles, made for applications in newspaper and television, environments which pose their own distinct hazards for type.
Retina MicroPlus uses exaggerated proportions and details to preserve the identity of each letter and word. Deep-cut notches absorb ink in print and further reinforce the gesture of each shape, on screens as well as paper.
The MicroPlus weights are “duplexed”, with each letter occupying a constant space from Extra Light to Bold. This uncommon feature allows designers to vary font weights without changing line lengths — an asset in tabular forms or screen interfaces.
For headlines and larger sizes of text, the Standard styles were developed with more conventional proportions and details, while preserving the earnest voice of the MicroPlus. A broader range of weights extends the family’s reach to an even wider range of media and applications.
The Museum of Modern Art has recognized Retina as a milestone in type design, and acquired it for its Architecture and Design Collection.
