Constantia is a serif typeface designed by John Hudson and commissioned by Microsoft.[2] It is a transitional serif design, influenced by Eric Gill’s Perpetua design. Development of the typeface began in 2003 and it was released in 2006. Constantia is part of the Clear Type Font Collection, a suite of fonts from various designers released with Windows Vista.

All start with the letter C to reflect that they were designed to work well with Microsoft’s Clear Type text rendering system, a text rendering engine designed to make text clearer to read on LCD monitors. The other fonts in the suite are Calibri, Cambria, Candara, Consolas and Corbel.

  • Description: Constantia is a modulated wedge-serif typeface designed primarily for continuous text in both electronic and paper publishing. The design responds to the recent narrowing of the gap between screen readability and traditional print media, exploiting specific aspects of the most recent advances in ClearType rendering, such as sub-pixel positioning. The classic proportions of relatively small x-height and long extenders make Constantia ideal for book and journal publishing, while the slight squareness and open counters ensure that it remains legible even at small sizes.
